The New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State (NYITCOM at A-State) is now accepting applications for a new summer program aimed at economically disadvantaged Arkansas high school students who are interested in conducting scientific research.

Summer Health Academy for Research Exploration, or SHARE, will provide students with eight weeks of intense laboratory exposure along with a cluster of professional and career development activities to increase their chances of navigating the academic pipeline towards a STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine) or professional degree. The program will take place in June and July and each participant will receive a $2,500 stipend for their work.

“It’s very important to NYITCOM that we foster interests in science in young people,” Rajendram Rajnarayanan, PhD., assistant dean of Research at NYITCOM said. “We created the SHARE program to give students very practical, hands-on learning opportunities that will be extremely beneficial and enjoyable for the participants.”

To participate in SHARE, the student must be an Arkansas high school junior or senior during the 2019-20 school year and must be recognized as economically disadvantaged. Preference will be given to students whose maximum family income does not exceed 200% of the current federal poverty guidelines based on family size.

At the end of the summer, some of the SHARE program participants will be eligible to apply for a college scholarship from the American Chemical Society and some of them will enter the INTEL/Regeneron Science Competitions facilitated by a grant funded by the Society for Science & the Public.
